Figure 1. Septic Tank
While there are different variations of the systems above, they give a good example of what the inside of your system looks like. Here are some common malfunctions of these systems and why it is important to get your system pumped every 3-5 years.
Common Malfunctions:
Figure 2. Treatment Plant with Aerator
Wastewater is backing up in the house
Gurgling in the piping in the house
Multiple fixtures are draining slow
Sewage odors in the yard
These problems are often caused by a blocked inlet, a scum layer that is too thick at the inlet or outlet, too much sludge in the tank, sludge entering the outlet, sludge clogging the pump and burning up the pump motor, the aerator failing, or other issues. Properly maintained tanks save lots of money by avoiding costly repairs and not paying sewage fees to the local municipalities. When you add those up, the cost to pump the tank every 3 years is not a big burden. Household waste has disease causing bacteria and viruses. Maintaining the tank keeps you and your neighbors healthy because the septic system will remove most of these pollutants. Here are some things you can do and avoid to keep your system functioning.
A wet spot in the yard at the treatment plant that wont ever dry up
Bright green grass over the septic tank or drain field
Do's

Use detergents that are low in phosphates and biodegradable.
Use fabric softener dryer sheets rather than liquids.
